One of the oldest known industries, ceramics, which dates tens of thousands of years, is defined as baked clay fired at very high temperatures. Either that it is such an ancient and such a widespread, or based on the coexistence of the earth, water and fire give it a mysterious as well as a technical object identity: Some see the fact of fire as revealing the essence of all things, so ceramic is the essence of the soil. This ancient and sometimes mysterious area, following the industrial revolution, becomes the address of artistic quests as well as being a bowl, a plate, a bath or a tile. At the beginning of the 20th century, the artistic ceramic phenomenon, which started with a ceramic bowl, which is known as studio ceramics, develops after the 1950s to include sculptural works. After 1990, we see ceramic as a part of contemporary art practices which varies from installation to performance.

Higher education programs related to this branch also play an important role in this transformation, which was experienced by the art of ceramics during the 20th century. In the days we live in the 21st century, these programs, on one hand, want to keep the traditional craft-based side of the branch alive, while on the other they want to emphasize that this material is a modern industrial product. These are added to the purely artistic purposes of ceramic, as is typically seen in the so-called ceramic-sculpture. Ceramic chemistry and technology is the basis for all these. Therefore, ceramic education is a multi-dimensional medium supported by art / design history and theory, where creative thinking is blended with functionality and design power with material knowledge.

Our department, which started admitting students in 2009-10 academic year, is in the desire and determination to train its students with a rich content ranging from the potter wheel to computer aided designs, from art history and theory to alternative firing techniques. Although the steps of maintaining the existence of human civilization to a large extent in a virtual realm are evident day by day, it appears that the warmth of the baked clay will continue to touch life as it has for thousands of years. Finally, the student quota limited to 15 and the sufficient physical equipment should be emphasized as a plus value of our department.
